Why Is iPage a Good and Bad Choice for a Web Host?

iPage is one of the oldest web hosts around, so I did some digging of a couple of its pros and cons. Here are some reasons why iPage is possible a good and a bad choice at the same time.

Some of the free features available as of June 16, 2015

Why is it a good choice?

1. Extensive experience in the business

iPage emerged during the dot-com bubble of the 90s while many of its competitors were founded years later. Now on its 17th year in service, clients are guaranteed to have high quality service with the company’s solid experience as foundation, in addition to their reliable technology.

2. Stable management

The heads of many web hosting companies come and go, and ownerships undergo multiple transitions through the years. As a company under the Endurance International Group, Inc. (EIC), iPage is entitled to higher capitalization and continuous expansion through the corporation’s network. Its sister companies include other major players in web hosting, such as FatCow, BlueHost, HostGator, and Directi.

3. Free site building tools

Not many web hosts offer this kind of feature, so iPage definitely gets a plus one for that. With this, new website owners will have easier management of their back-end and front-end needs.

4. Green host brand

By saying “green,” it means that the company is using renewable energy for their operation. In this case, they use 100% wind energy. Environment advocates and websites that have environment advocacies can definitely benefit from this.

Why is it a bad choice?

1. Modest number of domains under its belt

As of January 2015, the company reportedly serves roughly 2,000,000 domains. That figure puts it on the league of the biggest web hosting companies in the world, but it is still a little modest compared to some of its toughest competitors, such as Go Daddy’s 55,000,000 and HostGator’s 9,000,000 domains.

2. Security features have premiums

While many web hosts give extra security free of charge, iPage demands another payment for most of its security features. That’s a huge drawback considering that its toughest competitors give away a lot of freebies. The good news is that they have a free security suite that gives decent security.
